Qld bureaucrat on graft charges given bail

A Queensland public servant facing almost 60 charges after allegedly receiving secret commissions worth more than $130,000 has been given bail.

Paul Timothy Vasey, 55, appeared briefly in the Southport Magistrates Court on the Gold Coast on Monday charged with demanding and receiving bribes for government contracts.

The Crime and Misconduct Commission alleges he received invoicing kickbacks worth $133,700 when he was a senior procurement manager at a Gold Coast facility operated by the old state department of innovation, information, economy, sport and recreation.

Vasey has been charged with 59 counts of corruptly receiving or soliciting valuable consideration as inducement or reward for any act to principals, affairs or business.

Outside court, the Gold Coast man declined to speak to the media as he was accompanied by his defence lawyer Chris Nyst.

Magistrate Terry Duroux granted Vasey bail with no conditions for him to reappear in court on July 2.
