Brothers scale Q1 spire to change lightbulb

Climbing to the top of Q1 to change a lightbulb sounds like a "bright" idea in theory.

But in reality, it's a shocker of a job!

The Richards brothers (KTR Group) were tasked with changing the aircraft landing light on top of the 97m spire in rainy conditions last Friday.

"It was swaying a bit, about 30 centimetres but I just kept concentrating on the work," Lachlan Richards said.

"Although the view was pretty cool, you could see the whole coast."

It took him and his brothers Zach and Kane a day to build the scaffolding to get to the spire, then gently place the $8000 bulb and, with the help of an electrician, wire it up.

"l was a little lower than Kane and Lachy but I knew there were harnessed in and safe," Zach said.

"Luckily no one is scared of heights," he laughed.

It's the first time the bulb and back up light were changed since the Southern Hemisphere's tallest residential tower was opened in 2005.

"The spire was kind of sooty and blackened from lightning strikes, it was amazing," Lachlan said.

"It's really great to be part of something so iconic."

The brothers returned yesterday to check their handiwork and found it was all systems go .
