Python dislocates its jaw to eat pet cat in Brisbane

A Queensland snake catcher has shared a confronting video of a pet cat being eaten by a snake to warn owners about keeping their cats indoors at night.

The video taken yesterday morning in Sunnybank Hills shows the grey and white cat slowly being swallowed by the python.

Snake Out Brisbane owner Janne Torkkola said the household feline was long dead before he arrived, so he thought it best to let the python enjoy its meal.

"We're on the home stretch now," Mr Torkkola says in the video as the snake starts to gulp down the feline.

"This would be the second reason to keep your cats enclosed, particularly at night."

The video never reveals the first reason.

The whole ingestion took about an hour with the snake struggling most at the cat's shoulders.

"By the time we got there he had already constricted the cat and was starting to swallow from the head first so there was nothing we could do for the cat so we thought we would just sit there and wait," he told Brisbane Times.

"We sat there and had a coffee and filmed the python do its magic disappearing act of a cat."

The footage shows how the carpet python has to dislocate its jaw to taken in the cat.
