Pyne keen to involve parents in schools

A mounting pile of evidence that parental attitudes affects student results is why the federal government wants to get parents more involved in schooling.

A new report from English researchers has found that 15-year-old students with at least one parent born in an educationally successful East Asian country are 2.5 years ahead of their Australian classmates in mathematics.

Its findings suggest culture matters more than teaching when it comes to education.

Education Minister Christopher Pyne says mounting evidence along those lines is why the government is committed to encouraging greater parental engagement in schools.

The government is spending $4 million over the next four years to develop resources to encourage parents to become better involved in their children's schooling.
