Pedestrian struck and killed on Sydney's Upper North Shore

A pedestrian has been killed after they were hit by a car on Sydney's upper north shore, causing traffic chaos for morning commuters.

Emergency services were called to the Pacific Highway near the Beechworth Road intersection in Pymble after the woman was hit by a van about 6.20am.

The woman, believed to be aged in her 60s, died at the scene.

Traffic is expected to be affected for some hours and motorists are advised to avoid the area if possible.

Drivers travelling northbound are unable to access Bobbin Head Road as the right turn lane is now closed.

Beechworth Road is also closed in both directions.

Police have established a crime scene and an investigation is underway into the cause.

The male driver of the vehicle involved will be undergoing mandatory testing.
