Push to ease fines for driveway, curb parking

The Gold Coast City Council is advocating for a relaxation of parking regulations on driveways and kerbs on narrow streets.

Last year 175 warnings and 2072 fines were issued for illegal kerb and driveway parking.

The law was initially put in place to protect pedestrians and stop cars from blocking the footpath.

Mayor Tom Tate will now write to the state transport minister Brent Mickelberg to discuss the issue.

"Lets have a six-month trial, and if the trial works and there's no safety problem, we'll make it law," he said.

A new council report revealed that the council's ability to loosen parking rules is limited without changes to state government legislation.

But Mickelberg says the decision does not lie with the state government.

"If a local government wishes to take an approach that differs from the State Government regulations, this can be done either by installing parking signs, or, making a local law – both of these approaches will supersede the Queensland Road Rules in relation to parking," Mickelberg said.

The issue will be debated at a full council meeting later this month.
