Push for guardian for detention kids

There are calls for the federal government to appoint an independent guardian amid concerns for the welfare of children caught up in Australia's immigration detention centres.

Two of the country's peak welfare and aid groups want to take the legal guardian role off the immigration minister.

The Australian Council of Social Services and the Australian Council for International Development are also calling for the immediate release of children from detention.
