A recall has been issued for water bottles sold at Big W stores all across Australia over fears they pose a deadly choking hazard to young children.

Product Safety Australia yesterday said a piece of the Brilliant Basics 1L Sipper Drink Bottle hasn't been properly secured, and can come loose.

"The silicone sipper has not been attached securely and can become loose or detached," it said.

"There is a risk of choking, suffocation or death to young children if they put the detached sipper into their mouth."

Anyone who bought the bottle, which was available for sale nationally between January 3 and January 12 this year, has been encouraged to return it for a refund.

"Customers should immediately stop using the drinking bottle and return to any BIG W store for a full refund," Product Safety said.

The bottle comes in three varieties: pink with a purple lid, green with an orange lid, and blue with a green lid.
