Popular Kmart Christmas product recalled over chemical defect

A popular Christmas product sold at Kmart stores across the country has been recalled due to a chemical defect that could irritate some consumers.

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) has warned that the Christmas-themed quilt cover sets and pillowcase sets emit a strong chemical odour that may cause reactions in consumers.

Nine's A Current Affair first broke the story nine days ago after viewers came forward complaining of health issues.

The affected sets include the Mr & Mrs Claus queen bed quilt cover set, the Christmas Elf reversible single bed quilt cover set, the Merry Christmas pillowcase set, the Santa & Elves pillowcase set, and the Christmas Quilt single bed quilt cover set.

The products are sold under the brand Anko and could cause serious injury or illness if the products come into contact with skin or if the odour is inhaled.

"The product emits a strong chemical odour that may cause reactions to consumers, as it did not cure properly during the manufacturing process," the ACCC warned.

The product was sold from September 22 to December 4.

The identifying product features the following keycodes:

• Mr & Mrs Claus Quilt queen bed set (43435029)
• Christmas Elf Reversible Quilt single bed set (43434862)
• Merry Christmas Pillowcase (43434848)
• Santa & Elves Pillowcase (43434855)
• Christmas Quilt single bed set (43434879)

Customers are advised to "stop using the product immediately" and return the quilt cover to their nearest Kmart store for a refund.
