Samoan consulate latest to be evacuated

A suspicious package which caused the Samoan consulate in Sydney to be evacuated is being forensically examined by authorities.

NSW Police were called to Scott Street in Liverpool about 10am on Friday and the office was evacuated.

"An item has been seized by Fire and Rescue NSW," a police spokesman told AAP.

A Fire and Rescue spokesman said 10 people were evacuated as a precaution and two people were also decontaminated.

The suspicious package was not opened so there'd been no spillage.

It was removed for forensic examination and the consulate was reopened before midday.

The scare came a day after Savas Avan faced Melbourne Magistrates Court accused of sending asbestos-filled packages to embassies and consulates across Australia.

The 49-year-old is charged with posting 38 dangerous articles to foreign diplomatic offices in Melbourne, Canberra and Sydney.

Avan did not apply for bail and is expected back in court on March 4.
