Inmates evacuated from prison after fire starts in cell

Dozens of inmates have been evacuated from a Sydney prison after a fire broke out.

Fire and Rescue NSW said the blaze erupted in the Mary Wade Correctional Centre in Lidcombe, in the city's west.

The fire began in a cell, and officers worked with prison guards to contain it.

A total of 48 people were evacuated from the prison.

9News understands a number of people have been taken to hospital.

Parts of the prison were also filled with smoke.
