Prince opens WA's restored State Buildings

Prince Charles is a known admirer of heritage architecture and was clearly impressed by the State Buildings in Perth when he took a tour of the 140-year-old structures.

Previously known as the Old Treasury Buildings, the three interconnected heritage buildings have been restored to their heritage standard and include a vibrant retail, dining and hotel complex.

Charles unveiled a plaque in the Postal Hall and met with architect Kerry Hill who explained the challenges of repurposing a heritage building.

Prince Charles told guests, including state cabinet ministers and religious representatives, that he could imagine the effort and dedication required to restore the buildings.

"For quite a large part of my life, I've tried to help find new uses for historic buildings," he said.

"So many of them convert brilliantly for other uses, so I'm thrilled to see this building being put to such wonderful use."

The tour included a look at the four-storey staircase restoration and facade.

Prince Charles also met with craftspeople involved in the restoration of window frames and jarrah floorboards, as well as retailers in the complex.

The buildings were previously used as public offices, a police court and cell block.

But they had been empty since the government vacated the buildings 20 years ago.

FJM Property director Adrian Fini said the aim had always been to respect the heritage of the structures and have it be a public place.

Prince Charles will next visit the Seed Technology Centre to learn more about scientific research projects that conserve WA's threatened flora and advance the use of seeds for the restoration of degraded landscapes.

He will then reunite with his wife in Kings Park where they will greet members of the public, before flying out of Australia.

This is the fifth time the Prince of Wales has visited WA and the first visit for the Duchess of Cornwall.
