Government will ‘learn lessons’ from Martin Place siege: Abbott

The final report on the Martin Place siege has been handed to Prime Minister Tony Abbott, who has promised to learn the lessons it contains.

Mr Abbott said while the ongoing coronial inquest will focus mostly on the events that took place within the Lindt cafe in Sydney last year, ending in the deaths of gunman Man Monis and hostages Tori Johnson and Katrina Dawson, the report looks at the events leading up to the siege and Monis's own history.

"I'm determined to learn these lessons and assimilate them into policy because the first priority of government is to keep our country safe and plainly our country wasn't safe on that dreadful day in Martin Place just before Christmas," he said.

Meanwhile, repairs to the cafe itself are ongoing and Lindt hopes to announce a reopening date next week.

The re-opened cafe will include a permanent tribute to the victims of the siege.
