Pre-schooler takes his first steps thanks to stranger’s donation

A four-year-old boy has taken his first steps after a stranger heard his story and immediately wrote a cheque to pay for a walking device.

Luis Tamarez walked for the first time today, with the help of an Upsee mobility device bought by a stranger in a random act of kindness.

The pre-schooler has cerebral palsy, a lifelong condition that affects movement and posture, and is known at school for his "incredible spirit", according to ABC News.

Luis’s teacher had been planning to crowdfund to buy him an Upsee device, which costs $659.

The device is a harness that helps a child stand upright and walk while attached to someone else.

But local businessman Jim Burke, who heard the story from a teacher at the school who was also working as his Uber driver,  heard the plan and decided to write a cheque to cover the entire cost.

Touched by Luis’s story, Mr Burke said the decision to donate was a "no-brainer".

"It didn’t even take a split second. It was a very easy decision," he said.

Mr Burke has since been invited to the school to see Luis use his Upsee for the first time.

Luis’s mum told ABC News she couldn’t thank the Mr Burke enough for his generosity.

"It’s something that doesn’t have a price," she said.

"I have no words to describe it."
