Premier Mike Baird to drum up support for shark safety measures during NSW north coast visit

Shark safety barriers and Twitter alerts will be among the measures discussed during NSW Premier Mike Baird's visit to the state’s north coast today.

Mr Baird will meet with locals, as he works to win over support for shark safety projects, including two eco shark barriers.

The new measures have been developed in the wake of at least 14 serious shark attacks off the north NSW coast this year, including the fatal attack on surfer Tadashi Nakahara in February.

The government-approved shark eco barriers will be put up at Lighthouse Beach and Lennox Head by January. 

From today, Twitter alerts will be dispatched when tagged bull sharks, tiger sharks and great whites swim near two listening stations deployed near Sharpes Beach at Ballina, and Clarkes Beach at Byron Bay.
