Premarital sex blamed for hotel murder

A man accused of fatally stabbing his bride-to-be in a Brisbane hotel room was wracked with guilt after having premarital sex with his victim, according to reports.

Indian national Senthill Kumar Arumugam, 31, has been charged with the murder of 27-year-old Singaporean student Meena Narayanan at a Travelodge in Upper Mount Gravatt in the early hours of Tuesday.

Arumugam first met his alleged victim, a fellow Hindu, on an Indian marriage website, The Courier-Mail reports.

They met once in Singapore where they had sex — but the pair reportedly became depressed after the fact because they knew sex outside marriage was culturally forbidden for Hindus.

Arumugam, an engineer, checked into the hotel last Friday after arriving in Australia from South Africa, where he had been living.

He is accused of stabbing Ms Narayanan multiple times in the abdomen, covering her face with a pillow, and slitting her throat.

Police, called to the hotel after staff heard high-pitched screams lasting up to three minutes, had to force their way into the room to find Arumugam, who had allegedly sustained self-inflicted wounds.

Ms Narayanan's body was found covered by a doona.

Arumugam was taken to hospital for his injuries but yesterday made a brief appearance via audio link to Brisbane Magistrates Court.

He was remanded in custody and faces court again on May 5.
