Power price recommendations to be pursued

A push to speed up the transition for customers from one electricity retailer to another will be pursued after agreement from the nation's energy ministers.

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission made the recommendation among 56 in its retail pricing inquiry report released last month.

It called on the Australian Energy Market Commission to change the rules to only notify companies they were losing a customer on the day of the transfer to limit their ability to "save" the account.

State and territory energy ministers approved the cross-jurisdictional recommendation and 15 others at a meeting with their federal counterpart Josh Frydenberg on Friday.

Other recommendations included a requirement consumers be provided all information they needed before their contract ends and to fast-track consideration of tougher penalties and the Australian Energy Regulator's investigative powers.

A program of work to consider 23 other recommendations for which the energy council has responsibility was also approved.

Consultation will be part of the process.
