Power plan could cut 10% from bills

Australia's chief scientist predicts his blueprint for the electricity sector could save consumers 10 per cent on their bills over the next three decades, compared with business as usual.

Dr Alan Finkel delivered his report on a new national energy plan to Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull and state and territory leaders on Friday.

Energy costs for consumers would be 10 per cent lower under his plan - which includes a new clean energy target and improvements to the management of the grid - than if no new policy is rolled out.

Large industrial users would benefit to the tune of 20 per cent.

A government background document said the benefit equated to a $90 a year saving on household power bills.
