Tas tenancy clause against poll posters

Tasmania's public housing department has not been given a government directive to ban federal election campaign posters from its properties, the state Liberal administration says.

But there is a clause in tenancy agreements that such propaganda will not be displayed, a government spokeswoman added.

The state's Labor opposition on Tuesday labelled as undemocratic an alleged ban on campaign advertising in public housing properties.

MP Rebecca White said she had received reports from tenants who had been asked to take down posters displaying their preferred candidates for the July 2 poll.

"If this is the case the (state) Liberal government is denying these tenants the opportunity to participate in the democratic process," Ms White said, demanding answers from the minister.

A statement from the office of Human Services Minister Jacquie Petrusma denied there had been any recent directive.

"Housing Tasmania tenancy agreements include a clause around not erecting signage on properties, I understand Housing Tasmania generally enforces this only if there has been a complaint," a spokeswoman for the minister said.

"This clause existed under the previous (Labor) government."
