Over $30,000 found in Victorian op-shop donation bin

A bundle of money suspected to be worth more than $30,000 has been dropped in a Victorian op-shop bin.

A sorting volunteer discovered a package containing the notes, St Vincent de Paul Society Victoria CEO Cam Battaglia said.

"In our sorting facility, one of our wonderful volunteers has come across a package that contained some currency that on face value was worth $400 but we understand it's worth potentially a lot more," Mr Battaglia told Fairfax radio today.

The cash was found around a week ago.

A caller to the radio station reported it was worth about $32,000.

Mr Battaglia believed someone put the money away for safe keeping and forgot about it.

He said the charity would like to have the money returned to its owner.

"The money is actually inside some very distinctive packaging, so what we've done is, we've handed that package into police which is our normal process and I'm sure they'll be able to pretty quickly identify the legitimate owner if that person were to come forward," he said.
