A quick-thinking man did his part to help during blackouts caused by a storm yesterday by directing traffic with a pool noodle.

Matthew Roy, from Gymea in NSW, ran out into the street when traffic lights went down during the storm.

"Safety first, brightest shirt I could, second thing I need something to actually be directing the traffic with so the longest, brightest thing I had was my trusty pool noodle," he told 9News.

"People were pretty obedient, pretty fantastic, got a lot of 'thanks mate', a lot of 'cheers', thumbs ups, couple of boofheads come through but for the hour and half I was out there pretty much everyone was happy to be coming home."
