Poll shows Abbott's approval rating up, but Labor keeps lead

Prime Minister Tony Abbott's approval rating is up in the latest Newspoll, but Labor is still dominating on a two-party preferred basis.

For the 19th Newspoll in a row, Labor has maintained its two-party lead and is now in front of the coalition 55 percent to 45 percent.

According to the latest survey, published by News Corp, the government's primary support remains steady at 38 percent, although well below its 45.6 percent election result.

Labor is up one point at 39 percent, the Greens remain at 12 percent, and independents and minor parties have 11 percent.

Meanwhile, satisfaction with Mr Abbott's performance, which has recently hit record lows, was given a three-point boost to 28 percent.

The prime minister's dissatisfaction rating fell from the record-high of 68 percent to 63 percent, lifting his net satisfaction rating from -43 to -35 points.

Opposition Leader Bill Shorten's satisfaction rating also has risen, by four points to 39 percent.

His dissatisfaction level dropped seven points to 42 percent, giving him an overall satisfaction rating of -3 points.
