Poll backs RAAF strikes in Iraq

Australian voters strongly back RAAF air strikes on the Islamic State group in Iraq and the majority believe the threat of terrorism attacks on home soil is real, a new poll shows.

The Galaxy poll conducted for News Corp Australia follows the green light given to Australian Super Hornets to take part in US-led strikes against IS extremists in Iraq.

The jets have already commenced non-combat reconnaissance operations over Iraq in the last couple of days to familiarise pilots with the region, with air strikes expected soon, News Corp reported on Sunday.

The poll found 62 per cent of voters support Australia's decision to commence air strikes in Iraq, while 21 per cent are opposed and 17 per cent are uncommitted.

And 75 per cent believe the threat of a terrorism attack on Australian soil is real, with only 16 per cent disagreeing.

Six RAAF F/A18 Super Hornets, an E-7A Wedgetail surveillance aircraft and a KC-30A multi-role tanker transport, along with 400 RAAF personnel and 200 special forces troops have been deployed to the Middle East to help fight the IS group.
