Police were convinced Man Monis had bomb: reports

The group of police officers who stormed the Lindt Café in Martin Place believed Man Haron Monis had a bomb strapped to his body, according to reports.

A senior NSW Police source reportedly told News Corp the State Protection Group "knew as soon as the hostage was shot ... they would be going through that door".

The hostage in question was café manager Tori Johnson, who was killed during the siege almost three weeks ago.

"The team who went through the doors still thought there were bombs (inside). They were more worried about the backpack than the gun," they said.

The Sydney siege ended in the early hours of December 15 following a tense 17-hour stand-off where SPG officers attempted to negotiate.

"They were confronted by a man with what they think is a bomb strapped to him and firing a gun at them as they're going in," the source said.

Once Monis had been shot the officers turned their attention to getting the remaining hostages out of the café safely.

The bomb squad then took over, eventually discovering Monis' backpack did not contain explosives despite repeated threats to the hostages, and wires protruding from the bag.
