Police ‘risked their lives’ to save kids in Brisbane siege

Two police officers risked their own lives to save four children asleep in a Brisbane home where a man was shot dead.

9News has been told by senior police Deh Linh Ho’s wife called paramedics early yesterday, concerned that he was not taking his medication and had not slept for two days.

Police arrived at the Doolandella home to find Ho, also known as ‘Louie’, armed with a Samurai sword, screaming “I’m dangerous”.

The officers managed to get his wife and another woman out of the house safely but were then told four children were asleep upstairs.

9News understands Ho had raced upstairs with the sword, pulling a mirror off the wall and throwing two large shards of glass at police who were standing just inside the door.

The officers retreated when Ho ran back downstairs lunging at them with the sword.

A female officer was standing in the doorway and had her back to her partner who opened fire, shooting Ho dead.

Police say there was no time to use a Taser because he was moving too quickly towards the officers.

"The last thing a police officer ever wants to do is use their firearm and it will only ever be used as a last resort," said.

"Four children were saved and they did the best they could

“We have nothing to hide as police, we are open, we are transparent and we are up front."

The investigation at the scene wrapped up today but police are waiting on the results of a post-mortem examination, particularly toxicology results to determine if Ho had consumed drugs.

A report will be handed to the Coroner.
