Deaths of missing mother and daughter devastate Victorian town

A Victorian town is in mourning after a mother and her disabled daughter were found dead after going missing for nearly a week.

The bodies of Isabel Stephens, 89, and daughter Judy, 53, were found by emergency services on a remote bush track about 30 kilometres south of Benalla yesterday.

Police had spent six days searching for the pair after they were last seen having lunch at Tatong Tavern about 1pm last Saturday.

It is believed they drove their white Toyota Yaris south down Tatong Road, before turning right onto the logging track.

The vehicle was found on the top of the hill at the end of the track about 4.30pm, about one kilometre away from where the of the mother and daughter were located.

Police are awaiting the results of an autopsy but said the women’s deaths are not being treated as suspicious.

Detectives added that a tragic accident due to disorientation has not been ruled out.

Earlier this week the Stephens family expressed their hope for a miracle return, as Judy required daily insulin and had an intellectual disability.

“Your mind boggles because there is no answers,” Helen Stephens told 9NEWS.

“We're in a vacuum at the moment … it’s like you're in a bad movie and you're going to wake up,” Barbara Stephens added.
