Homemade quilt could help identify remains of little girl dumped in South Australian scrub

The remains of a hand-made quilt could hopefully be the clue that leads to identifying the little girl whose skeletal remains were found in a suitcase dumped in the South Australian bush.

The quilt was found with the child's remains and clothing near Wynarka, in the state's southeast, almost two weeks ago.

Police released images of the badly degraded, colourful quilt on Sunday hoping it would help them identify the little girl who is believed to be aged between two-and-a-half and four, had fair hair and could have died up to eight years ago.

Detective Superintendent Des Bray said the quilt appears to be homemade and machine-stitched.

"Someone loved that little girl and either made her, or gave her, that quilt. I would appeal for whoever loved her to get in touch with us," Det Supt Bray said.

The fabric, which is still intact, reveals a wide border of black material decorated with musical notes along with images of a pumpkin patch, a camel and dragonflies.

The investigation has resulted in 237 calls made to Crime Stoppers, resulting in 25 children nominated as potential victims eliminated from the investigation.

Police are still appealing for a man seen in the area about six to eight weeks ago with a dark suitcase to come forward.

Police have previously said the girl would have suffered a "violent" and unnatural death.
