Civilians step in after cop allegedly attacked trying to help barrister

A police prosecutor was allegedly attacked while trying to save a barrister jumped on the street in Brisbane today.

Sergeant Josh Kelly was hit multiple times, police said.

"He's got some swelling to his face and some injuries to his ribs," Senior Sergeant Sean McKay said.

A man has been arrested after allegedly attacking a police officer outside court in Brisbane. 9News

Civilians also intervened in the altercation.

"Me and a couple of other fellows ran across the road and saved him," witness John told 9News.

"Copper said to reef him to the ground, so I reefed him to the ground, and they all jumped on him."

Another lawyer pinned the alleged attacker to the ground and performed a citizen's arrest.

The man has been charged with violent offences. 9News

Witnesses told 9News the alleged attacker was seen shouting in the street and shoved a woman into an ATM before lashing out at the barrister.

Senior Sergeant McKay said the alleged assault "seems totally unprovoked" but investigations were ongoing.

The man was charged with assaulting police, causing grievous bodily harm, and other offences.

He'll face court tomorrow.
