Australian Federal Police are investigating allegations sports bet firm Tabcorp paid bribes in Cambodia.

The company is being investigated for allegedly making a payment of $200,000 to a business linked to family of Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen.

Tabcorp said it explored a business opportunity with a Cambodian sports betting market in 2009.

"At that time, some Asian countries were considering deregulating sports betting," the company said in a statement.

Tabcorp chose not to pursue the opportunity and the business was never operational, the company said.

It said it would cooperate with the police investigation.

The federal police said the investigation was ongoing and they won't comment further.
