Police praise orderly AFL crowd's 'understanding' amid increased security

Victorian police have praised the behaviour of the AFL grand final crowd, amid beefed-up security following an increased national terror alert.

Of the 99,458 people who attended the MCG to see Hawthorn defeat Sydney, police evicted just 18 people and issued eight penalty notices for offences including entering without a ticket, failing to give a name and address to police, ticket scalping, entering the playing arena, and alcohol-related offences.

Two people were arrested, one for being drunk in a public place, and the other on an assault-related matter.

Police say MCG security also evicted another seven people from the stadium.

Double the usual number of police were deployed for the event, with officers patrolling the ground's car park, conducting vehicle checks, and patrolling trains and stations.

Assistant commissioner Shane Patton said police were comfortable with how the operation ran.

"We haven't had any significant issues at all," Mr Patton told reporters at the MCG.

Mr Patton said the arrival of Hawks and Swans fans had been orderly, bag inspections had gone well and had not caused the expected delays.

"It's been very good, the public response, they've been very understanding."

The Melbourne Cricket Club also increased its security significantly.

Police had reassessed security risks for the grand final after Melbourne terror suspect Numan Haider, 18, was fatally shot on Tuesday night outside Endeavour Hills police station after stabbing two officers.

Police have said no specific threats to any major Victorian events have been identified.
