A police officer's foot has been run over during a dramatic arrest in Melbourne.

Police were called to reports of an erratic driver in Wantirna South just before 10pm yesterday.

When they arrived, two officers approached the car and tried to speak to the male driver.

The driver allegedly reversed the car and ran over the foot of one of the officers.

He then allegedly drove off, and rammed a second police car before crashing into a tree.

A 39-year-old Hoppers Crossing man was arrested and charged with multiple offences including reckless conduct and theft of motor vehicle.

He was bailed to appear at Ringwood Magistrate's Court in October.

The police officer is recovering in hospital.
