Residents want answers after Russell Island bushfire

Residents on Queensland's Russell Island have expressed their anger after a bushfire threatened their homes.

About 60 homes were at risk from the blaze, which began around midday on Thursday and intensified yesterday.

At a town hall meeting today, locals criticised the lack of an evacuation plan and said there had been little communication from the council.

Five fire crews and a water-bombing helicopter worked to contain the blaze, which was located on the southern end of the island.

Residents were urged to evacuate their homes and move to the northern end of the island, where Redland City Council has activated the Local Disaster Management centre.

Strong winds are predicted for tomorrow and residents are urged to be on high alert.
