Police investigate second drive-by shooting in Canberra in a week

Police are investigating a drive-by shooting in Canberra’s south, the second in less than a week.

Superintendent Ben Cartwright said at least 27 shots from a high-powered rifle were fired at a house in Badimara Street, Waramanga around 11.20pm yesterday.

“Through windows, through doors, into the back garden shed, into the roof and three motor vehicles were damaged,” Det. Supt Cartwright said.

Police said witnesses heard leaving the area at high speed.

Police said the occupants are relatives of a known outlaw motorcycle gang member and there had been a previous shooting incident at the property in 2015.

While it’s believed the incident could be an act of retaliation to an arson and shooting in Kambah last week, police are also looking at other lines of inquiry, including an ongoing dispute between two outlaw motorcycle gangs.

“I won’t go into particulars of which gangs we’re talking about here, because I don’t want to inflame things any further, but they should know that we know,” Det. Supt Cartwright said.
