An Australian Army Cadets staffer has been stood aside while police investigate allegations of unacceptable behaviour at a Sydney cadet unit.

The Australian Army is also inquiring into the allegations that relate to events in 2013, Defence says in a brief statement on Wednesday.

Australian Army Cadets began initial inquiries after a formal complaint was first made in February 2014.

The matter was referred to police following more reports this week.

Defence would not comment further.

But The Australian newspaper has reported that a senior ranking army cadet officer was alleged to have engaged in sexual behaviour with three female cadet minors at a barracks in Sydney's suburbs.

Defence in its statement reiterated that illegal, offensive or discriminatory behaviour contradicts Defence Force values.
