Police believe they have located the car involved in a hit and run crash near Geelong on Sunday that left a cyclist dead.

A burnt-out car was found today on the Cape Otway Road at Winchelsea, about 65km from the scene of the crash that claimed the life of 77-year-old Corio man Gordon Ibbs.

Police believe Mr Ibbs was hit by a car on Geelong-Ballan Road in Anakie just after 2.30pm.

Witness said the car involved did not stop at the scene, and was last seen heading towards Geelong.

The car involved was described as a maroon-coloured VT Commodore sedan with damage to the front.

The burnt car will be towed later tonight and will undergo further testing.
