Police find Melbourne home empty after seven-hour stand-off

Victoria police have been left red-faced after discovering a home where they’d engaged in a seven-hour stand-off was in fact empty.

Police spent the seven hours attempting to coax a person out of a house on Callanan Drive in Melton yesterday, only to find there was no one home when they entered the property, The Age reports.

A Victorian police spokeswoman said the officers were responding to “information regarding a person of interest”.

She said police took “every precaution (attempting) to call out to anyone inside the house,” she said.

"After no response from the property the house was entered and cleared about 4.30pm and no occupants were located inside."

The spokeswoman said it was believed a man had been alone inside the house.

Streets surrounding the property had been blocked off.

Police did seize a motorcycle and a vehicle, which were believed to be stolen, after storming the property.
