Police confirm body believed to be Stephanie Scott had been burned

Police have confirmed a body they "certainly believe" to be Stephanie Scott was burned.

Superintendent Michael Rowan said the female body found in Cocoparra National Park, near Griffith, at 5pm yesterday afternoon was "certainly" Ms Scott, however a formal idenfitication will take some time.

The body was found five metres from a roadway about 70km from Leeton by police searching on motorbikes.

"We certainly believe that the remains are that of Stephanie," Supt Rowan said.

He confirmed the remains had been burned.

The family was notified yesterday afternoon.

"In these sort of circumstances, there's nothing that any of us can do that can make it any better," Supt Rowan said.

"The only thing that we can do, and I undertook with the family, that I would be totally honest with them and I have been."

A crime scene has been set up and forensic specialists are processing the area.

The body will be transported to Glebe today where forensic examination will continue.

The Leeton teacher was allegedly murdered by a school cleaner on Easter Sunday.

The discovery of her body comes merely hours before Ms Scott was meant to marry her fiancé Aaron Leeson-Woolley.

Vincent Stanford, a cleaner at Ms Scott's workplace of Leeton High School, was charged with her murder on Thursday.

It is understood he has not been assisting police after they found images of a burned body on a camera allegedly in his white Toyota Hilux.

It is understood police used a triangulation based off Mr Stanford's phone to narrow down a search area for Ms Scott's body.

Senior managers from the cleaning company Mr Stanford worked for are now in Leeton and his distraught colleagues have been offered counselling.

The hunt for clues also intensified at Stephanie's school with forensic teams removing several items from the building.

Ms Scott’s car was found on a property on Thursday and police divers, assisted by State Emergency Service volunteers, begun the meticulous task of searching a nearby dam and irrigation culverts.

Ms Scott was last seen on Easter Sunday at Leeton High School where she was preparing a lesson plan for a relief teacher who would take her over her duties while she was on her upcoming honeymoon.

She had known her fiancée, Mr Leeson-Woolley, for most of her life and the pair had been preparing to marry in front of 100 guests this weekend.

Ms Scott's devastated sisters have posted tributes online.

"You may no longer be here, but the beautiful memory of you will forever live on," her sister, Kim, posted to Facebook.

"Thank you for 26 unforgettable years Stephanie.”

Reverend Jonathon Williams told the ABC, the small town of Canowindra, Ms Scott's former hometown north-east of Leeton, was devastated.

"We're a small town, you expect it to happen in the cities ... so for it to happen to people who are so loved by a small town like this is really, really difficult," he said.

"We're all coming together and it's just a wonderful thing to watch.”

Police zeroed in on Ms Scott's colleague after it emerged Mr Stanford had allegedly provided misleading information.

They allegedly found blood in Mr Stanford’s car and a photo of what appears to be a burnt body on his mobile phone.

School keys, matching the description of a set given to Ms Scott earlier in the day, were also allegedly found at his house.

Mr Stanford remains behind bars after being charged.

His legal representative did not apply for bail and Mr Stanford has been remanded in custody to reappear via videolink in June.

Police are still piecing together the chain of events that led to Ms Scott’s alleged murder and have urged anyone with further information to come forward.

Dozens of yellow ribbons and a line of candles flicker surround the school as a special tribute.

"How can you explain this? It just can't be explained," a man paying tribute said.
