A driver remains on the run after ramming a police car and injuring two officers in Sydney's inner west last night.

Police tried to stop the driver of a white Ford Ranger for a random breath test in Lilyfield at 11.35pm but the driver failed to stop.

The car was followed to Canal Road where the driver suddenly reversed into a police car, injuring its driver and another officer in the front passenger seat.

A third officer fired a shot at the 4WD but the driver fled the scene.

"It was just dead silence and then all we heard is bang bang bang," witness Nick Angelucci told 9News.

"And then the police came raging through and we had no idea what's going on."

The car was later found abandoned in Quirk Street, Rozelle.

It had been crashed into a parked car and the driver is yet to be found.

A critical incident investigation is underway and police are appealing for witnesses to come forward.

Anyone with information should contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
