Police car rammed, shots fired at thief in Melbourne

Police are hunting the driver of a stolen vehicle who fled after officers fired shots at him in Melbourne’s east yesterday.

Police were responding to reports of a stolen car on Elgin Street in Berwick at around 4.30pm when the driver of the vehicle allegedly rammed their vehicle, promoting officers to open fire.

Police engaged in a pursuit of the vehicle but could not stop the car, which was later found dumped on Kelletts Road in Rowville. 

The driver is yet to be located and police believe he may have been injured in the confrontation.

Hospitals are on alert for anyone who presents with injuries consistent with the incident.

“We’re really confident who know who this this is and we are really confident we will bring this to a close really quickly,” Commander Dean Stevenson said.

Anyone who sees an injured man in the Rowville area is urged to contact Triple Zero. 

An independent investigation by police professional standards command will be conducted into the incident.
