Melbourne police car crashes trying to stop cyclist

A surveillance camera installed to catch out vandals has instead captured the moment a police car crashed into a Melbourne shopfront while chasing a cyclist.

CCTV footage shows the patrol car chase the cyclist onto the footpath, running over a tree before smashing into the Padre Coffee warehouse.

The man on the bike was reportedly sandwiched between the car and the warehouse's freshly painted security door.

The embarrassing bingle was recorded outside a coffee shop on Lygon Street, Brunswick East early Thursday morning.

Co-owners Marinus Jansen told the Herald Sun that he had installed the camera to catch graffiti artists and was "blown away" when watching back over the night's events.

"We called Brunswick police station and told them we've got video," Mr Jansen said.

"They came down and were really sheepish but trying not to laugh."

The café owner shared the footage on Instagram, captioning the chase "#speechless #brunswickas".

Victoria Police spokeswoman Belinda Batty said the cyclist suffered only minor injuries in the run-in and has been charged on summons with drug offences.
