P&O Cruises have upped the stakes for family-friendly fun with the introduction of their newest cruiseliner to be based in Australia.

The ship formerly known as the Princess Cruises Dawn Princess has had a multi-million dollar makeover and been renamed the P&O Pacific Explorer.

Sporting the two longest waterslides on an Australian-based ship, it also features a flying fox, a barefoot bowls area and new celebrity chef restaurants.

There are 12 different eateries on board, some of which will feature a surcharge due to the premium products being used.

Cruise Passenger magazine deputy editor Bernadette Chua believes passengers will be pleased with the changes.

"They've created an entire new atmosphere around cruising," Ms Chua said.

"It's not just the destinations that have become, you know, the focal point. It's the ships that are so amazing now."
