PM to meet veteran's mums at summit

The prime minister will meet with the mothers of six army veterans who took their own lives after leaving the Defence Force.

Scott Morrison has invited the women to the private meeting on Wednesday in Sydney ahead of the Save Our Heroes summit hosted by The Daily Telegraph.

Jan Hewitt, whose son Brock died this year after being discharged, told the Telegraph she wants the federal government to show some "backbone" and call a royal commission.

The mothers will later speak at the summit, which is being held at NSW Parliament House. Victoria Cross recipient Ben Roberts-Smith is also attending.

The group of six includes Ms Hewitt, Julie-Ann Finney, Glenda Weston, Nikki Jamieson, Colleen Pillen and Karen Bird.

They've said the Australian Defence Force effectively abandoned their sons, with some blaming the Department of Veterans Affairs lack of support.

Ms Jamieson told The Daily Telegraph the meeting was a chance to "unpack the issues related to veteran suicide so we can move forward into a new era rectifying the mistakes from previous governments".

Ms Finney said she had collected more than 250,000 signatures calling for a royal commission into military suicides.
