PM to reveal social policies at launch

Malcolm Turnbull will announce a swathe of new social policies as he launches the coalition's re-election campaign with a week to go.

The prime minister will kick-start the push for a second term seven weeks into his eight-week campaign, in the marginal Liberal-held inner-west Sydney seat of Reid.

Mr Turnbull is due to call on voters to choose stability over uncertainty, drawing on the recent decision of Britain to leave the European Union.

But he will also reveal a range of new social policy promises including $192 million towards mental health changes.

The money will help fund ten new primary health network lead sites, with four to focus on suicide prevention.

He will also announce:

* $48 million to help disadvantaged children with their education through The Smith Family's Learning for Life Program.

* $31.2 million in internships and career advice for women and girls to study and work in science and maths.

* $50 million to improve the digital literacy of senior Australians.

* $10 million to protect and preserve Aboriginal and Torres Strait languages.

Mr Turnbull will again emphasise the coalition's plan to boost jobs and economic growth, calling out Labor's Medicare campaign and potential for a Labor-Greens-independent alliance.

His predecessor Tony Abbott will be watching on, as will former prime minister John Howard.

But ex-Liberal leader John Hewson won't be in attendance, skipping the party's election launch to speak at a climate protest in Mr Turnbull's Wentworth electorate.

Bill Shorten also launched his campaign in Sydney and will hold a second launch in the traditional location of Brisbane on Sunday.

It will double as a 'save Medicare rally'.
