PM pursues deal with southeast Queensland

Scott Morrison is pursuing a major deal to revamp southeast Queensland's choked transport networks after spending hours stuck in traffic during a recent visit to Brisbane.

The agreement between council, state and federal governments will primarily focus on redesigning the region's road and rail networks to slash ballooning travel times.

"Already we are delivering billions of dollars of funding for congestion-busting roads and rail projects," the prime minister told The Courier-Mail on Tuesday.

"This new deal will help unlock further investment to make sure Queensland remains a major tourism destination and one of the world's premier locations to live, work and raise a family."

One in seven Australians live in southeast Queensland and the region is home to a swag of marginal seats, which could determine the Morrison government's fortunes at the upcoming federal election.
