'Do you feel bouncy?' PM asks kids

It was bad enough having to go to school on a Sunday.

But then the girls from Canberra's Good Shepherd primary school had to start fielding awkward questions from the prime minister.

"Do you feel bouncy after you've had a good time on the court?" Malcolm Turnbull asked the young netballers after watching them play.

"Um, not that much," one replied, before Mr Turnbull rephrased.

"But you must feel better when you're active?

"Yeah, that's what I mean."

Mr Turnbull and Sport Minister Sussan Ley were at the school to announce a $60 million boost for the coalition's Sporting Schools Program, aimed at combating child obesity by getting students participating in sport before, during and after school.

The government has already invested $100 million in the program, with more than 5000 schools taking part since it started a year ago.

After watching the girls play some netball, Mr Turnbull approached to tell them about the funding injection.

He was greeted with "sup" - short for "what's up?"

"We've been so impressed with how successful our School Sports Program has been that we're going to announce today we're investing some more money in it so more kids can do what you're doing," he told them.

Mr Turnbull will go head to head later on Sunday with Opposition Leader Bill Shorten in a leaders' debate at the National Press Club.
