PM shells out for NSW north coast

Malcolm Turnbull was less than keen to try a nut in front of the eager media pack.

Especially a macadamia with abalone flavouring.

"I take your word for it," he said about a description of the variety during a visit to a NSW north coast macadamia processing facility.

It took local Nationals MP Kevin Hogan bringing a bowl of salted macadamias up close, for the prime minister to give it a crack.

"Very good. That's a very superior macadamia," he said.

Mr Turnbull made the visit to the marginal seat of Page to announce a $25 million jobs and investment package for the region, aimed at boosting employment.

Having on Tuesday twice said the coalition will win the July 2 election, on Friday he insisted every vote will count.

"This is going to be a very close election," he said.

Mr Turnbull was joined by his deputy Barnaby Joyce, who let the media in on a state secret.

"When we're at cabinet they bring out bowls of nuts and everybody pinches the macadamias," he said.

"So you're left with the cashews."

Before Mr Turnbull's arrival the president of the Hemp Party and WA Senate candidate Michael Balderstone gate-crashed the event, claiming to have an innovative idea to create 100,000 jobs by legalising medicinal cannabis.

"We are legislating for medicinal cannabis," Mr Joyce told him.

"Nothing is happening yet," Mr Balderstone replied, complaining about the slow progress on a NSW trial.

He was removed by AFP officers as Mr Turnbull's convoy arrived, missing his chance to give him an inflatable joint.

The prime minister returned to Sydney where he will face off against Bill Shorten in the third leaders debate - this time on Facebook.
