PM calls for an end to juvenile theatrics

They've spent nearly eight weeks trading barbs over who's unfit to govern, ramping up their scare campaigns and warning voters about the prospect of each other leading the nation.

So Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull's call for a truce with Labor leader Bill Shorten on juvenile theatrics is likely to be met with a fair bit of public scepticism.

In a speech on Thursday Mr Turnbull was expected to call for an end to division for division's sake, saying voters are sick of gotcha moments in politics.

It's an interesting call two days out from polling day.

But that isn't stopping one cabinet minister seeing the lighter side of things.

"It's a little bit like losing weight - every day is an opportunity to start afresh," Trade Minister Steve Ciobo told ABC radio on Thursday.
