A cruise liner carrying 2500 passengers has docked in Sydney Harbour after being stranded outside the heads for 24 hours.

Huge waves caused by the deadly storm cell affecting NSW had prevented the Carnival Spirit entering the harbour.

It was due to land on Tuesday morning but the Port Authority of NSW closed Sydney Harbour and Port Botany to commercial shipping.

The ship's been off the coast since then.

A passenger from Sydney on Carnival Spirit earlier said many people were feeling very queasy.

"Everyone is ready to get off," Debbie from Cherrybrook told ABC Radio.

Passengers were told just after 7.30am the ship would be heading into the Overseas Passenger Terminal during the morning.
