Investigation launched after pilot dies in light plane crash in Victoria

The Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) is investigating after a pilot died in a light plane crash in Victoria's south-east this morning.

Police believe the crop-dusting Piper PA-25 agricultural aircraft crashed into rugged terrain in Seaview, near Grand Ridge Road, about 7.15am.

The pilot, who was the sole occupant of the aircraft, died at the scene.

ATSB chief commissioner Angus Mitchell said a team of transport safety investigators with expertise in aircraft operations, maintenance and engineering would be deployed to the accident site.

"During spraying operations, the aircraft collided with terrain," he said.

"The pilot was fatally injured and the aircraft was destroyed.

"Investigators will examine the wreckage and site surrounds and will retrieve any relevant components for further examination in the ATSB's technical facilities in Canberra."

They will also analyse any recorded data, as well as interview witnesses and other parties involved.

The ATSB has appealed for anyone who may have seen the aircraft in any phase of its flight, who may have footage or has knowledge of the operation of the aircraft, to make contact them via email witness@atsb.gov.au.

The transport safety investigator aims to publish a preliminary report detailing basic information in approximately 6-8 weeks' time.

A final report will be published at the end of the investigation.

Police will prepare a report for the coroner.
