A pilot is being investigated after falling asleep on the job and overflying their route to a Tasmanian airport by 46kms.
The Australian Transport Safety Bureau is investigating a ‘serious incident’ that took place on November 8 this year.
The pilot was the only person on board a freight flight from Devonport Airport to King Island Airport, according to a summary of the investigation document.
“The ATSB is investigating a pilot incapacitation involving a Piper PA-31, VH-TWU, operated by Vortex Air, near King Island Airport, Tasmania,” the summary said.
“As part of the investigation, the ATSB will interview the pilot and review operational procedures.”
A final report into the matter is expected next year.
During 2018, the ATSB completed 25 complex aviation safety investigations and 34 short investigations.
The complex investigations included the finds from its second examination into the ditching of an Israel Aircraft Industries Westwind aircraft off Norfolk Island in 2009.
It also included the 2015 incident involving an Airbus Helicopters EC 135 TI at Cooranbong in NSW.
